Course Details
Introduction
Already today a significant portion of the Internet traffic is due to audio/visual applications (VoIP, Youtube, IPTV). The used transport protocols (TCP, UDP/RTP), however, are inappropriate and lack means of optimised and application layer adapted content transport.
The course will introduce the requirements for media transport in the Internet, introduce proper channel models, calculate the channel capacity of those channels and derive a framework for optimised media transport. The focus is on the error coding in the transport layer, so that the results can be applied to any audio/visual application.
Besides giving an overview over recent specifications and standards (DVB, DLNA, ISMA) the course will introduce latest research results on media transport.
Prerequisites
As well Digital Transmission & Signal Processing (Telecommunications I) as Audio/visual Communications and Networks (Telecommunications II) are recommended for this course. Students with solid background in Computer Networks and Error Correction, however, are also encouraged to participate.

- Task sheet solutions must be handwritten (except source code submissions) and detailed.
- Only solutions which are non-alterable can be handed back to the students during the exercises.
- All task sheet solutions are collected and kept as relevant to the examination (it is your own duty to create a copy for your records).
- You may not submit task sheets in groups, but working in groups is okay; please indicate who you worked with.

Task Sheets
- Task sheets are due Tuesdays before the lecture.
- Task sheets can be handed in either
- in the lecture hall on the front desk
- in the letter box of the Telecommunications Chair in C6.3 (10th floor, foyer – please do NOT use the letter box at the ground floor of building C6.3!)
- at the Telecommunications Chair, C6.3, Office 10.07
- Task sheets are issued on Tuesdays and are available online.
- 12 (graded) task sheets in two blocks (first block 6 sheets, second block 6 sheets)
- Correction:
- Task sheets are worth 30 points total.
- You need >= 50% (at least 15 points) of correct answers for a task sheet to pass this task sheet.
- You need > 50% passed task sheets to pass a block (so 4 out of 6) for exam admission blocks A and B have to be passed.
