Once again end of block B task sheets is approaching quickly. As you know, You HAVE to pass at least 4 out of 6 task sheets in this block as well to be qualified for the exam. It is just a remainder that we have only one task sheet submission to complete the block. Just write us an email or approach us in person before you fail the block, because when it has happened, we can't help you anymore. We don't want you to fail, but we can only help you if you discuss with us in case you have any questions/troubles.

Course Details

Introduction

Audio/Visual Communications & Networks will deepen your knowledge on modern communications systems. It will focus on wireless systems since from a telecommunications perspective the combination of audio/visual data – meaning inherently high data rate and putting high requirements on the realtime capabilities of the underlying network – and wireless transmission – that is unreliable and highly dynamic with respect to the channel characteristics and its capacity – is the most demanding application domain.

The lecture will build on the foundation layed as well in "Signals and Systems / Signale und Systeme" as in "Digital Transmission and Signal Processing / Digitale Übertragungstechnik und Signalverarbeitung" and it will apply the building blocks introduced there onto the various communications systems. The course will aim at being self-contained, however, it will not be able to repeat basic mathematical concepts and tools introduced in Telecommunications I.

As the basic principle the course will study and introduce the building blocks of wireless communication systems. Multiple access schemes like TDMA, FDMA, CDMA and SDMA are introduced, antennas and propagation incl. Link budget calculations are dealt with and more advanced channel models like MIMO are investigated. Modulation and error correction technologies presented in Telecommunications I will be expanded by e.g. turbo coding and receiver architectures like RAKE and BLAST will be introduced. A noticable portion of the lecture will present existing and future wireless networks and their extensions for audio/visual data. Examples include 802.11 (with the TGe Quality of Service extensions), 802.16a and the terrestrial DVB system (DVB-T, DVB-H).

Prerequisites

"Audio/Visual Communications & Networks" is a course during the main study period and by such requires a solid foundation of mathematics (differential and integral calculus) and probability theory. The course will build on the mathematical concepts and tools taught in Telecommunications I while trying to enable everyone to follow and to fill gaps by an accelerated study of the accompanying literature. "Signals and Systems" as well as "Digital Transmission and Signal Processing" are strongly recommended but not required.

Course Structure

Basic Rules

  • Please note that small changes and corrections will be applied to the lecture notes throughout the semester. If you find mistakes or have suggestions how to enhance the lecture notes we appreciate your input!
  • Please don’t hesitate to tell us if you have any comments or suggestions related to lecture notes, task sheets, exercises or even organization things. We will improve it soon so you can benefit from it, not only future students.
  • Task sheet solutions must be handwritten (except source code submissions) and detailed.
  • Only solutions which are non-alterable can be handed back to the students during the exercises.
  • All task sheet solutions are collected and kept as relevant to the examination (it is your own duty to create a copy for your records).
  • You may not submit task sheets in groups, but working in groups is okay; please indicate who you worked with.

Exam Dates:

  • Both exams are ORAL exams.
  • Frist Exam  - August 2017 : 8th, 9th and 10th
  • Re-Exam - September 2017 : 25th, 26th and 27th
  • The time slots for the exams will be online soon for the students to choose.

Exercise Group

  • Place: Campus C6. 3. Room: 9.08
  • Time: Wednesday 12:00 - 14:00
  • During the exercises you will be asked to demonstrate your understanding of the task sheet problems

Task Sheets

  • Task sheets are due Tuesdays before the lecture.
  • Task sheets can be handed in either
    • in the lecture hall on the front desk
    • in the letter box of the Telecommunications Chair in C6.3 (10th floor, foyer – please do NOT use the letter box at the ground floor of building C6.3!)
    • at the Telecommunications Chair, C6.3, Office 9.06
  • Task sheets are issued on Tuesdays after the lecture and are available online.
  • The task sheets for this course will be divided into two parts. It is necessary to pass both the blocks individually to be eligible for the exam.
  • Matlab Solutions have to be submitted via CMS.

Correction

  • Task Sheets:
    • Task sheets are worth 40 points total.
    • 30 points per task sheet are solved at home, 10 points during the tutorial.
    • You need > 50% (at least 21 points) of correct answers for a task sheet to pass this task sheet.
    • You need > 50% passed task sheets to pass a block (so 4 out of 6) for exam admission blocks A and B have to be passed.

MATLAB

  • Since March 2012 the UdS has a MATLAB campus license which can be used by all university students for non-commercial purposes.
  • CIP pool at Saarland university provides access.
  • SSUM Signals and Systems Using Matlab package: a collection of demonstrations and exploratory applications for signal processing. It demonstrates extensively the concept of convolution, Fourier Analysis, FIR and IIR filters, modulation and much more. To use all examples the Matlab "Signal Processing Toolbox" is required (available in the CIP-room and included in Campus License).
